In no exaggeration, Murchison is one of the very best safari destinations, not just in Uganda, but in the entire East African region. Whether it is a wet or dry season, a game drive or a relaxed boat cruise in this large and enchantingly diverse national park counts among the continent’s classic safari experiences. Of all animals in the Big 5 family, the only one absent are the rhinos, but these can be seen at a sanctuary found on the way to the park, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Day 1. Safari from Kampala with stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
After your pickup from Entebbe airport or Kampala, our driver guide will start off your five hour journey to Uganda’s biggest National Park, Murchison Falls National Park. The trip which is destined towards the Northwestern part of Uganda will start off on a high note with a stopover at rhino sanctuary where you will experience a bushwalk in search for the rhinos.
Upon arrival in the afternoon, you will be checked into your safari lodge.
Day 2: Early morning game drive and boat cruise on river Nile
After breakfast, you will leave for an early morning drive to the starting point of game drive. The safari largely unfolds at a time when animals are most active. Brace yourself for a delightful sight of countless giraffes, elephants, lions, buffalos…
Listening at night to several hippos and warthogs rumbling past various lodges and campsites remains one of my most awe-inspiring safari moments in the wilderness.
The most popular landmark of Murchison its thunderous waterfall that flows into the rift valley after plummeting. It feeds the fast flowing river Nile which lazily meanders through its savannah and woodland. To experience the beauty and sheer force of nature of the waterfall, you will pursue a two hours boat cruise to its starting point.
Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking at Budongo forest
In Murchison’s southern section is a pristine tropical forest that doubles as a lifeline for the second highest population of chimpanzees in Uganda, Budongo forest (has over 600 chimps). The interior is a patchwork of towering indigenous trees like mahogany. After you chimpanzee trek in here, you will set off for Kampala or Entebbe Airport depending on your flight schedule.
